SIP Services Solution Compared To A PRI

Scales of Justice Weighing PRI and SIP

Most information, data or communication travels over the Internet. Without going into the detailed conversation about the way the Internet works with Hops and Layers, let's just say the Information Highway as it is called is just a big pipe that everyone pours their stuff into. So why add your voice traffic to this big pipe? The obvious reason is cost but in reality there are many benefits to using SIP Trunking instead of PRI.

  1. All Carriers from AT&T to XO use the Internet and SIP to transport all their traffic behind the connection to your building is a network of VoIP or SIP switches and Fiber Optic cables that make up the modern voice networks. So if they are using SIP anyway, it would make sense to use it on the customers end. To that point if the carrier would need to convert his SIP Network back to Digital PRI just for customers who want PRI, it makes more sense to just go SIP right into your PBX. New UC solutions as well as legacy PBX's are increasingly using SIP as their access. The big question is: which SIP trunking provider is the best for your organization? There are over 200 companies in the US that provide some form of SIP trunking, which one fits your requirements best?
  2. Time to turn up SIP Trunks can be as little as 48 hours. Time to turn up a PRI circuit is at least 2 weeks and in most cases it runs 30 days or more. The reason is SIP can be used with any existing or Legacy Internet connection and it is just programming to add or delete SIP trunks (Called Talk Paths) whenever you want. A big advantage of a good SIP solution is that, even though there are hardware components, the actual services are on-demand and can be implemented with little time and expense.
  3. SIP has no territory so phone numbers called DID numbers (Direct Inward Dial) can be taken from anywhere in the US and brought into a customer's IP PBX with no call forwarding or "Out of Rate Center" charges. As we transition into 10 digit numbers for everyone soon the area codes will mean less and you won't be able to tell where a call actually came from or is going. This has vast implications for marketing and sales organizations.

In conclusion ATEL has 30 years' experience with voice services from TDM to SIP and we can customize a solution for your business that is both cost effective and reliable.
