Power over Ethernet — PoE — is one of the most practical shifts we've seen in low-voltage work over the past decade. And in 2026, it's no longer a specialty option. What Is PoE, in Plain English?

Standard Ethernet cable carries data. PoE-enabled cable carries data and electrical power — simultaneously, over the same wire. A PoE-capable network switch injects low-voltage DC power into the cable run, and the device at the other end draws what it needs.

The result: one cable pull, no separate outlet, no electrician required at the endpoint. Devices are also centrally powered, so when the switch is on a UPS battery backup, everything connected to it stays on during a power outage — cameras, phones, access control readers, all of it.

You're Probably Already Using It

Most businesses have PoE-powered devices in place and don't realize it. Common examples include:

  • VoIP desk phones — nearly every modern IP phone runs on PoE
  • IP security cameras — indoor domes, outdoor bullets, PTZ cameras
  • Wireless access points — Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 APs are heavy PoE consumers
  • Access control card readers and door controllers
  • Digital signage displays and kiosk screens
  • IoT sensors for HVAC, occupancy, and environmental monitoring

Why Your Cabling Infrastructure Matters More Than Ever

Here's where it gets technical — and where getting it wrong is expensive.

Not all PoE is equal. There are three main standards:

  • PoE (802.3af) — up to 15.4W per port. Fine for basic IP phones and older cameras.
  • PoE+ (802.3at) — up to 30W per port. Covers most access points and HD cameras.
  • PoE++ (802.3bt) — up to 90W per port. Required for Wi-Fi 7 APs, AI/PTZ cameras, and high-power devices.

In 2026, most new deployments are moving straight to PoE++ — and that puts demands on your cabling that older Cat5e installations simply can't meet. Long cable runs, low-grade conductors, and dense cable bundles can cause voltage drop and heat buildup that destabilize devices or shorten their lifespan.

The safe standard for any new PoE installation today is Cat6A. It handles higher power loads, supports longer runs without degradation, and is ready for 10-gigabit speeds when your network eventually needs it.

The Mistakes We See Most Often

After 40 years of low voltage work in San Diego, we can tell you exactly where projects go sideways:

1. Undersized switches

A switch has a total power budget across all its PoE ports. If you add devices over time without tracking that budget, ports start throttling or dropping power to lower-priority devices — your cameras go offline, or your phones reboot randomly. We see this constantly in offices that've grown organically.

2. Legacy cabling that can't handle the load

Many San Diego buildings — especially those built or wired in the late 90s and 2000s — have Cat5e cabling. It works fine for data, but under PoE++ loads over longer runs, it can generate heat and cause signal degradation. A cabling assessment before any major device upgrade is always worth it.

3. No battery backup on the PoE switch

One of the biggest advantages of PoE — powering cameras and access control through the switch — disappears if the switch isn't on a UPS. We've seen building access systems go completely dark during outages that a $300 battery backup would have prevented.

4. No plan for future devices

PoE infrastructure is easy to expand — if it was designed with expansion in mind. Spare ports, conduit with pull strings, and properly labeled patch panels make adding a camera or AP a one-hour job instead of a half-day project. Skipping that planning upfront always costs more later.
